The fastest way to lose weight and lose it safely is not to go on a radical diet or to hit the gym like mad.
The fastest way is to change HOW you eat…rather than concentrate on what you eat. At least if you want to start making changes quickly.
Now if you do this you’ll be setting up the conditions to make it easier to change what you eat because in the long run you’ll want to reduce processed, fatty or sugary foods. If you don’t set up the conditions then you’ll most probably end up trying to stick to a tough diet with no success.
Or maybe a brief bit of success and then nothing else happens!
So what is behind this claim that the fastest way to lose weight is to change HOW You eat?
The reason has a lot to do with how your body stores food when you eat. Your food gets broken down into amino acids, sugars (glucose) and fat as well as other vitamins and nutrients.
The sugar part naturally raises blood sugar levels. And it’s when these levels get to a certain level above normal that you get insulin being released.
And when insulin gets released amino acids and glucose actually get turned into fat! It takes the body around 10 times the energy to do it but it still does it. So even if you have a low fat diet if it’s high in sugar you will PUT ON SOME FAT!
Now the process is not a straightforward “sugar up, insulin released, fat stored” thing. But for the most part the take away information is that you should SLOW down the release of blood sugar so that more of those food constituents get used by the body and its organs. Rather than being put in storage for later use (which BTW historically makes sense if at one time we didn’t eat 3 meals a day!)
So you may start to see now why changing how you eat can actually be the fastest way to lose weight. Over and above exercise and typical dieting.
You can slow down the rate of blood sugar rise (and slow the rate of insulin release) when you eat by doing 2 things:
- Eat lower glycemic index foods
- Eat more meals a day in smaller portions.
It’s the second one that’s the most immediate tip to try.
Here’s an example:
Say you eat a full Subway sandwich for lunch, you know the 12 inch ones. Well instead of cutting this out, buy the usual sandwich but split it in two. Eat half for lunch and have a piece of fruit.
Then eat the rest about 3 hours later…or as I like to do have it at 4pm as an extra meal (a 4th meal if you will).
Try this for a while and you’ll find two things happen:
- You start to get hungry at 4
- You don’t eat as big a dinner.
You’ll be spreading your calorie intake over the day and subtly changing how you eat your food. It’s a good start to make!
So the fastest way to lose weight – start eating more meals!
